The late registration fee for the inaugural Coach Jimmy Yagi Summer Hoops Camp has been waived and signups will be taken up until the camp starts.
The skill development camp is for boys and girls ages 9-17 and runs July 31-Aug. 3 in Hilo.
The camp fee is $60 and all participants will receive a camp shirt and group photo.
“This is a great opportunity for players to improve their skills, play games, and get a chance to work under some of the top collegiate coaches in the state,” said P&R Director Clayton Honma, who is the Coach Yagi camp director.
The camp will be run concurrently at Afook-Chinen Civic Auditorium and the new Panaewa Covered Basketball Courts.
University of Hawaii women’s head basketball coach Laura Beeman and her assistants as well as University of Hawaii at Hilo women’s head basketball coach David Kaneshiro will take part in the camp.
The camp is being sponsored by the Parks and Recreation Department, the Hawaii Police Department’s HI-PAL Program and the nonprofit Big Island All-Stars.

ch Jimmy Yagi, who coached the Vulcans for 18 years and helped guide the Vulcans-Hawaii Basketball School for 37 years.
The camp will start at 9 a.m. each day and include instruction and skill-development drills. Games will be played in the late afternoon and possibly evenings.

Registration forms are available at Aunty Sally Kaleohano’s Lu‘au Hale at 799 Pi‘ilani St. in Hilo. Checks should be made payable to the Big Island All-Stars and include the note “Jimmy Yagi Summer Hoops Camp.”

Agena clinic on tap at Honokaa
Coach Dennis Agena of Kalakaua Basketball and his staff will conduct a three-day youth basketball clinic Aug. 23-25 at the Honokaa County Gym.
Agena runs the popular Kalakaua Clinic on Oahu and has developed several standout players over the years, including Derrick Low.
Children ages 6-18 may participate. Sponsored by the Hamakua Athletic Association, the clinic will take place from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Saturday, and 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Sunday. Times may vary due to the number of participants.
Players need to bring a basketball, basketball shoes, water, and proper playing attire. The registration fee is $60. Registration and waiver forms are available at Parks & Recreation offices, Ted’s Garage in Honokaa, and Sports Line in Hilo.
